April 22 marks the 56th anniversary of Earth Day, a global movement dedicated to environmental preservation and sustainable practices. This year's theme, Our Power, Our Planet™, continues to call on individuals, businesses, and governments to take action by embracing renewable energy, reducing fossil fuel reliance, and protecting biodiversity. Earth Day 2026 is a rallying cry for all of us to make smart energy choices, advocate for sustainable innovation, and accelerate the transition to a cleaner future.

At Essentia, sustainability isn't just a commitment, it's our mission. Every day, we work to minimize our ecological footprint, from the materials we source to the way we manufacture and ship our products. Essentia is Leading the Industry Toward Plastic-Free Mattress Shipping

Essentia produces the highest-density foam mattresses in the industry. That density is the reason our mattresses contour more precisely to the body, recover their shape night after night, and carry a 20-year warranty that no other mattress brand can match. It is also, honestly, the reason fully eliminating plastic from our shipping wrap is a harder engineering challenge for us than it is for anyone else.

Most mattresses on the market are light and compressible enough that a craft paper wrap holds securely during the compression and roll-packing process. Ours are not. The same density that makes an Essentia mattress perform better also exerts significantly more outward force when compressed, enough to break a paper-only wrap before the mattress ever reaches your door.

Here is where we stand today, and we're telling you exactly what's in every layer because transparency is core to who we are:

• Inner wrap: A 50/50 blend of craft paper and recyclable plastic; providing the tension needed to keep the compressed mattress securely bound.
• Outer wrap: A full layer of 100% craft paper; biodegradable, compostable, or recyclable.
• Both layers are recyclable. Neither contains the non-recyclable blended plastic used by greenwashing competitors.

Our team is actively engineering a 100% plastic-free solution. We are closer than we have ever been, and we will announce the full transition the moment it is complete, not before. The density that makes the problem harder is exactly the same reason our mattresses outperform and outlast everything else on the market.

Our craft wrap is made from natural wood pulp, making it biodegradable and compostable under the right conditions. This contrasts sharply with plastic wraps, which can take hundreds of years to decompose and can release harmful microplastics into the environment. Paper is also one of the most recyclable materials, with established collection and processing systems in most regions,  facilitating the circular use of materials and reducing the need for virgin paper production.

Our commitment extends throughout the supply chain: we only source from sustainably managed forests. The production of craft paper also carries a lower carbon footprint compared to plastic production, especially when renewable energy sources are used in manufacturing and when the paper is sourced from nearby forests to minimize transportation emissions.

On a technical level, craft paper wraps offer high tensile strength, providing a durable protection layer for our mattresses during storage and transportation; preventing tears or damage that might occur with thinner plastic wraps. Unlike plastic, craft paper also allows the mattress to breathe, which is essential for preventing moisture buildup and reducing the risk of mold and mildew, especially during long-term storage or in humid climates.

2025–2026 Manufacturing Milestones

This past year marked a landmark leap forward in how Essentia manufactures its mattresses. Our factory, already GOLS certified organic, completed its evolution into a fully intelligent, paper-free manufacturing system. Every machine in the facility is digitally connected and communicates with every other machine in real time. There are no paper records, no manual handoffs, no disconnected processes. Every step speaks to the next.

The centerpiece of this transformation is our automated zero-waste recycling line. When a mattress is cut to size, the cutting machine automatically feeds every offcut and scrap directly into the recycling line; hands-free, without any human intervention. Materials move machine-to-machine straight from cutting into recycling, where they are transformed into products like our organic pillows. Nothing goes to landfill. Nothing sits waiting. Nothing is wasted.

This level of integration is not standard in mattress manufacturing, or most manufacturing, for that matter. It reflects a foundational commitment to building a factory that is as clean in its process as the products it makes.

Here at Essentia, we believe that we need to practice Earth Day every day. This is why our Beyond Organic Standard is so important. Beyond Organic is a self-managed initiative that is at the core of all our product design and processes. Our mattresses are and always have been far beyond organic — thoughtfully designed and sourced for clean, ethical, and life-replenishing sleep. Being true to our Beyond Organic values, Essentia products are always Vegan and Cruelty-Free. Our old-world methodologies are not easy, but they are the right way to ensure the purest possible outcome, preserving clean and healthy indoor air quality while achieving the highest recovery performance and sleep benefits ever.

Ingredient Sourcing

Of utmost importance to Essentia is sourcing the right ingredients to make our organic mattresses and Beyond Latex™ organic foam mattresses, while being fully transparent and upholding our Beyond Organic® standard. Some of these ingredients include GOTS Certified Organic Cotton, natural plant extracts, and Hevea Milk, the milky white "sap" of the Rubber tree, collected much like Maple tree sap. The hevea milk used at Essentia is sourced from GOLS certified organic plantations where acceptable working conditions are maintained and there is no practice of child labor. Hevea milk is the main ingredient in our Beyond Latex™ organic foam.

Sustainable Shipping

We put a lot of stock into the environment and our impact on it, which is why it was extremely important for us to find the best possible solution for shipping Essentia mattresses. It takes special machinery to compress, roll, and pack mattresses as dense and heavy as ours, something that hadn't been done on a product this dense before.

We roll pack our mattresses not only for your convenience, but because it's a huge win for the environment. Roll packing allows us to use 75% less space in a truck and 75% less packaging. Using less is always better, but using boxes made from 100% recycled paper is just extra gravy *(99% post-consumer, 1% post-industrial). And with the completed transition to craft paper wrap, Essentia has now fully eliminated plastic from our mattress shipping process, every single shipment.

Biodegradable by Design

When you've decided it's time to upgrade your Essentia mattress, you won't be worried about your old one living in a landfill. We make our mattresses from nature, and it only makes sense that they can return to nature. If an Essentia mattress is left fully exposed to the elements (wind, sun, rain) it will biodegrade in just 3 years, a failsafe for the rare case you can't find a mattress recycler in your area.

Zero-Waste Facility

In our GOLS and GOTS certified organic factory, our intelligent manufacturing system ensures that every latex and foam offcut is automatically captured and recycled into other products like our organic pillows, achieving true zero waste.
