The comfort layer in the Tatami behaves like memory foam: it contours, it relieves pressure, it returns to shape. But it is blended from GOLS certified organic latex in our own factory, with no petrochemicals and no toxic ingredients.
Our craftsmen don't wear protective gear to blend it. We call the room where it's made the kitchen.
Even, but unforgiving
A latex slab is uniformly springy. It pushes back evenly, which supports well but leaves pressure at the shoulder and hip, and most builds add wool or fiber batting for cushioning.
Comfort with a cost
Polyurethane memory foam contours, but it is petrochemical-based, off-gasses VOCs, and traps body heat at the surface where it softens further through the night.

What to know before you buy a latex mattress
Are latex mattresses good for people with allergies?
Essentia mattresses are the best for people with allergies. Essentia's foam was independently tested by Dr. Robert G. Hamilton of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and found to be impervious to dust mites and not to contain any latex proteins that a person may be allergic to. Most mattresses you are comparing Essentia to are actually hybrids using innerspring systems and layers of wool, these all become nesting grounds for dust mites to thrive. They feed on your skin cells, are hydrated by your sweat, and the feces they release is what you are actually reacting to! If you suffer allergies, you will want to prioritize a mattress without any wool or fiber batting.
Is latex better than memory foam for pressure relief?
Beyond Latex™ was engineered to answer that question directly. Standard latex is responsive and supportive, but it doesn't contour to pressure points the way memory foam does. Beyond Latex closes that gap, it brings memory-foam-level pressure relief to a full latex mattress, without the petrochemicals synthetic memory foam is made from. In the Tatami, a high-density organic latex core supports spinal alignment while the Beyond Latex™ layer above it fills the gap at the shoulder and hip, giving you the contouring of memory foam and the responsiveness of latex in one organic material.
Do latex mattresses have springs?
Surprisingly, most of the mattresses you are comparing Essentia to have springs! They may be touted as latex mattresses, but when you look at the breakdown, they are really hybrid mattresses with innerspring support cores and minimal latex. Every Essentia mattress model is spring-free, which avoids the sagging and uneven wear that coils develop over time. The Tatami uses a high-density organic latex core in place of springs.
Are latex mattresses non-toxic?
It depends on whether the latex is certified organic or synthetic. Certified organic latex avoids the VOC off-gassing associated with synthetic foam. Every component of the Tatami is certified organic and produced in Essentia's GOLS and GOTS certified factory.
How long do latex mattresses last?
High-density organic latex resists the sagging that lower-density foam and springs develop over time. Essentia backs the Tatami with a 20-year limited warranty: full replacement coverage for the first 3 years, and prorated credit toward your next Essentia for the remaining 17.
Do latex mattresses transfer motion between sleep partners?
Less than a spring mattress. With no coil system to bounce, a solid latex mattress absorbs movement close to where it happens rather than carrying it across the surface, which is why latex is a common choice for couples or anyone sharing a bed with kids or pets.
What's the difference between the Tatami and the Stratami?
Both are full latex, top to bottom, with a Beyond Latex™ layer and zero coils, no hybrid construction on either. The difference comes down to surface technology. The Stratami has a contoured, ribbed surface built for a distinct kind of pressure relief, more cushioning and contour. The Tatami's surface is completely flat, which lets Beyond Latex's slow-response support come through more directly, giving it a firmer feel. Both are excellent organic mattresses; it's a matter of whether you want more contour or more firmness.
What is Essentia's sleep trial and return policy?
The Tatami comes with a 120-night sleep trial. You're asked to sleep on it for at least 30 nights before deciding, since your body needs time to adjust to a new sleep surface. If it's not the right fit after that, Essentia arranges pickup, so there's nothing to repack or ship yourself, and processes a refund minus a return fee of 9% of the mattress's listed retail price.

What Foundation Can I Use?
Your new Essentia mattress works perfectly on our vertebase foundation or Rize adjustable foundation.
You may also use your Essentia on a slatted bed base. Should you opt for slats, ensure that each slat is completely flat and firm (no bowing upwards or plastic parts) and that there are no more than 3 inches of space in between each slat.
Please ensure that you are using a proper foundation option with your Essentia as an improper foundation may affect your warranty. A box spring should not be used unless the inside does not contain actual springs but is a firm surface.
No Toxic Flame Retardants
Picking a non-toxic flame retardant that did not affect the performance of our mattresses was of utmost importance. This is why we use Kevlar fabric. While it is the most expensive flame retardant option, it allows us to use a non-toxic fabric that does not go against our Beyond Organic values.
Essentia is proud to have an allergy friendly and vegan mattress free of wool or wool padding.
Think of the kevlar fabric much like a sock that we place the mattress in and then sew up on the open end, this is a fabric layer you will find under the GOTS certified organic removable cover. There are no toxic flame retardants sprayed or used in our GOLS certified organic factory.
How do Mattresses Ship?
As the leaders in environmental manufacturing, this means that we also had to prioritize a way to ship our dense mattresses to reduce our carbon footprint. In order to do this, we have developed a specially fitted roll-pack machine to compress and roll our mattresses into boxes that take up 75% less space on the delivery truck.
All mattresses are compressed and rolled, shipped in a tall, skinny box. In fact, you may confuse it for a carpet if not for the weight. We offer FedEx delivery to your door on every order to the contiguous United States.
If you would like a team to set up your new mattress, you do have the option to purchase Ryder In-Home Delivery with or without old mattress removal. The Ryder In-Home Delivery upgrade is $299 per mattress and foundation, and the Ryder team will call you to schedule a delivery day and timeframe for your setup. Simply choose this option at checkout if you would like to set up service.

Certifications Explained
Essentia is a GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) 3.0 certified facility CU 847578, able to manufacture organic finished goods. Essentia’s supply chain has demonstrated that there are procedures in place to properly track and manage organic materials up to the point where they are shipped to the client. Essentia has demonstrated it has a system in place that will allow traceability and proper storage of all its GOLS components at all stages of production.
Each Essentia mattress and pillow is also GOLS certified and made with≥ 95% certified organic latex, the highest possible standard for organic latex, and is the main component of our patented Beyond Latex organic foam formulas.
Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the world's leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibers, such as cotton. It ensures strict environmental and social criteria are met across the entire supply chain, from harvesting raw materials to labeling, requiring independent third-party certification. All Essentia mattresses and pillows feature a GOTS certified organic removable cover.
Care for Your Mattress
- Your Essentia mattress will never be flipped, there is only one surface to sleep on. The proper sleep surface is the top of the mattress with the beige organic cotton cover.
- Should you choose to do so, you can rotate your mattress once a year but this is not a required step.
-We do not recommend the use of a waterproof cover with our mattresses unless the situation calls for it such as a small child learning to potty train, worries about an animal having an accident, or any such situation that may result in the bed being soiled.
- In the event there is a small accident or spill on your mattress don’t fret! Your first step will be to absorb as much of the excess liquid as possible with a dry cloth. If you feel the need for surface cleaning we do not recommend the use of any chemical cleaners. You can choose to use essential oils in water such as tea tree and lavender. Allow the surface to fully air dry before putting the covers back on.
- The GOTS certified organic cotton cover is machine washable. As organic cotton can be affected by heat please only wash in cold water using a mild eco-friendly detergent. Allow to air dry.
- Do not use bleach or other chemical cleaners on your mattress.
- You should be using your mattress on a flat, rigid, breathable surface. The mattress should not be used on the floor.
Labels on Your Mattress
When you receive your mattress, there will be a few labels affixed to it. The first you will notice is the tag or flag on the corner of the foot of the mattress that will show your model name.
If you chose to upgrade your foam to our EMF protection foam, you will also find a tag that confirms this.
At the head of the mattress, where you will also find the head of the zipper, will be the law labels, GOTS certified organic label and the Beyond Organic label. Here at Essentia, we do not use any synthetic foams or polyurethane foams. There are no chemical adhesives used to construct our mattresses, we do use a solvent-free, GreenGuard Gold certified, water-based adhesive where needed. For mattresses shipped to the United States, you will see noted the Kevlar fabric non-toxic fire barrier. We do not use any chemical flame retardant or spray any chemicals in our factory.

Essentia’s mattresses feature a 20-year prorated warranty! To demonstrate the durability of Essentia’s high-quality mattresses, a 250lb hexagonal shape roller passes over the mattress 200,000 times, which simulates 10 years of use. What was found is that the Essentia mattress experienced a loss of less than a quarter inch of its original height at the 10-year mark. Based on these results, it’s safe to say you can expect your Essentia to stand the test time, with the added security of your twenty-year prorated warranty.
